Extended Family Photos at W.G. Jones State Forest in Conroe, TX

There's something really special about getting the whole family together for pictures, especially when multiple generations are involved.

I recently photographed an extended family session at W.G. Jones State Forest in Conroe, Texas, and it was such a sweet afternoon. Everyone arrived dressed in beautiful fall colors, which looked lovely against the natural backdrop of the forest.

But what I loved most was getting to capture all the different relationships within this family.

Fall Family Pictures at W.G. Jones State Forest

W.G. Jones State Forest is a beautiful location for family photography in the Conroe and The Woodlands area. The tall trees and natural surroundings provide a simple, timeless backdrop that keeps the focus right where it belongs—on the people in the photographs.

For this session, the family coordinated their outfits in warm fall colors. Everything complemented each other without looking too matchy-matchy, which is exactly what I recommend for larger family groups.

The colors worked beautifully with the wooded setting and gave the photographs a warm, cohesive feel.

Extended Family Portraits with Grandparents and Grandchildren

When photographing an extended family, I like to make sure we capture more than just one big group picture.

We started with photographs of everyone together, then worked through the individual family groupings. We also made time for portraits of the grandmother with her grandchildren.

Those photographs are especially meaningful to me. Having everyone together in one place isn't always easy, and pictures of grandparents with their grandchildren are the kind of images families treasure for years.

I always encourage extended families to think about the different combinations they'd love to have photographed before the session. That way, we can make sure nobody gets overlooked.

The Candid Moments Are Just as Important

Of course, some of my favorite photographs weren't the posed ones at all.

Between the group portraits, I captured a few moments of the family walking together, laughing, and simply enjoying each other's company.

Those are the images that often tell the most about a family. The way everyone interacts, the laughter, the little moments in between.

I love a beautiful portrait where everyone is looking at the camera, but I love those genuine, unscripted moments just as much.
