What to Wear for Senior Pictures in The Woodlands

One of the first questions I hear after a senior session is booked is, “What should I wear?”

The best senior photo outfits are the ones that still feel like you. Senior pictures are meant to capture who you are during this season of life, so you don’t need to completely reinvent your style for your session. A little planning, though, can make a big difference in how your photographs look and how confident you feel in front of the camera.

As a senior photographer in The Woodlands, I help my seniors plan their sessions around their personality, location and overall vision. That includes helping with wardrobe choices before we ever start taking pictures.

Here are my recommendations for choosing what to wear for senior pictures.

Start With an Outfit You Feel Great In

Your senior session probably isn't the best time to experiment with an outfit you're unsure about.

Choose clothing that fits well, feels comfortable and looks like something you would actually wear. If you're constantly adjusting a dress, worried about how a shirt fits or uncomfortable in your shoes, that tends to show in photographs.

I want you thinking about having fun during your session—not thinking about your clothes.

A favorite pair of jeans with a great top can photograph just as beautifully as a dress or more formal outfit. The goal is to look like the best version of yourself.

Bring Outfits With Different Looks

If your senior photography collection allows for more than one outfit, I usually recommend choosing outfits that give you some variety.

Instead of bringing three similar dresses or three versions of jeans and a top, think about creating distinctly different looks.

For example:

  • a dress or polished outfit
  • jeans with a favorite top
  • something casual that feels very “you”
  • a school, college or sports-related outfit
  • boots, a jacket or another piece that adds personality

This gives your final gallery much more variety.

For seniors who book a session with multiple locations, we can also coordinate outfits with each setting. A dress might work beautifully in a natural field at golden hour, while jeans, boots or a more fashion-forward outfit may be perfect for an urban location.

Choose Colors That Work With Your Location

Where we're taking your senior pictures can help determine what you should wear.

If we're photographing around the greenery, trails and natural areas of The Woodlands, neutral tones, soft colors, denim and earthy shades tend to photograph beautifully.

For a polished location such as Market Street or Hughes Landing, you can have a little more fun with sophisticated or fashion-forward outfits.

And if we're heading into Houston for an urban senior session, a bold outfit, jacket or more editorial look can work incredibly well against modern architecture and city backgrounds.

You don't have to perfectly “match” your location. I simply want your clothing and surroundings to complement one another rather than compete for attention.

Don't Be Afraid of Color

Neutrals photograph beautifully, but that doesn't mean every senior needs to wear beige, white and denim.

If you love color, wear color.

Rich blues, greens, reds and other saturated colors can look incredible in senior portraits. Softer pastels can also be beautiful, particularly for spring sessions.

The important thing is choosing a color that looks good on you and fits your personality.

If you rarely wear bright colors, you don't need to suddenly show up in a bright pink dress because someone told you it photographs well.

Be Careful With Busy Patterns and Logos

Patterns aren't automatically a problem, but very small or extremely busy patterns can sometimes become distracting in photographs.

The same is true for oversized logos and graphics. Unless the logo or graphic has a reason for being part of your senior story, simpler clothing usually keeps the attention where it belongs—on you.

Texture, on the other hand, can photograph beautifully. Denim, sweaters, layered fabrics and interesting details can add dimension without overwhelming the image.

Think About Movement

Some clothing photographs beautifully because of the way it moves.

Flowy dresses and skirts are great examples. They give us opportunities to incorporate walking, spinning and movement into your senior portraits.

That doesn't mean you need to wear a dress. Jackets, layers and even long hair can create movement. It's simply something worth considering when you're putting your outfits together.

Don't Forget the Shoes

Shoes matter more than you might think, especially when we're creating full-length portraits.

Make sure your shoes work with the entire outfit and are reasonably comfortable for the location we've chosen.

If your session involves walking around Market Street, Hughes Landing or another large location, you can always bring comfortable shoes for walking and change into your preferred shoes when we're ready to photograph.

And yes, boots are always welcome. This is Texas, after all.

Accessories Can Make an Outfit Feel Finished

Jewelry, hats, jackets, boots and other accessories can add personality and give us additional variety without requiring another complete outfit.

Layers are particularly helpful because we can photograph an outfit with and without the jacket, sweater or other layer.

Just don't feel like you need to pile on accessories simply because you're having professional pictures taken. A few intentional pieces usually work better than adding things you wouldn't normally wear.

Incorporate Something Meaningful

Your senior pictures don't have to be limited to traditional outfits.

If something has been an important part of your high school experience, bring it.

That might mean your letter jacket, sports uniform, instrument, dance shoes, college sweatshirt or something connected to a hobby.

I've also photographed seniors on family property with horses, cows, barns, fences and old trucks. Those personal details can turn a beautiful senior session into something that actually tells your story.

What Should Guys Wear for Senior Pictures?

For guys, I usually recommend the same basic principle: bring some variety while staying true to your normal style.

A combination might include jeans or chinos with a casual shirt, followed by a button-down, jacket or more polished outfit.

Athletes can incorporate a jersey, uniform or equipment for part of the session. Letter jackets and college shirts can also be great additions.

Fit is especially important. Clothing that is extremely oversized can hide your shape, while clothing that's too tight can be uncomfortable and restrictive.

Should You Buy New Clothes for Senior Pictures?

You certainly can, but you don't have to.

Some of my favorite senior outfits are pieces the senior already owns and loves.

If you are shopping specifically for your session, try everything on well ahead of time. Sit down, walk around and look at the outfit from different angles. Make sure you're comfortable with the fit before removing the tags.

I'd also recommend photographing yourself in the outfit with your phone. Sometimes clothing looks different in a photograph than it does when you're looking in a mirror.

What Should You Avoid Wearing for Senior Pictures?

There aren't many absolute rules, but I would generally avoid clothing that:

  • doesn't fit comfortably
  • requires constant adjusting
  • is badly wrinkled
  • has distracting graphics or oversized logos
  • doesn't work with your chosen location
  • feels completely different from your normal personality

And don't choose something simply because it's currently trendy if you don't genuinely love it. These photographs are going to be around much longer than the trend.

Bring Options

If you're stuck between two tops, bring both.

I'd much rather have a few extra options available than have you leave something at home and wish we'd had it.

Before your session, we can talk about what you're considering, your locations and the overall look you want. Helping you plan is part of the senior photography experience.

Your Senior Pictures Should Look Like You

Years from now, I want you to look back at your senior pictures and recognize yourself in them.

Your clothes are part of that story, but they shouldn't become the entire story.

Choose outfits that make you feel confident, incorporate pieces that mean something to you, and don't put too much pressure on yourself to create a “perfect” senior wardrobe.

We'll take care of the rest together.
