Colorful Wedding at the Sunset Coffee Building in Houston
If you're drawn to weddings that feel colorful, joyful and a little different from the traditional white-and-green wedding palette, this Sunset Coffee Building wedding in downtown Houston is a perfect example.
The entire day was filled with color—from the wildflower-inspired florals and mismatched bridesmaid dresses to the reception tables filled with flowers, amber glassware and candlelight.
And the Sunset Coffee Building was such a fun setting for it all.
Located along Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston, the venue gave us a mix of green outdoor spaces, city views and the more modern, industrial feel of the building itself. It was a great contrast to all of the bright color throughout the wedding.
A Colorful Outdoor Wedding Ceremony
The ceremony took place outside beneath the trees, with wooden chairs lining the aisle and colorful floral arrangements marking the ceremony space.
Rather than sticking to one or two flower colors, the arrangements incorporated shades of pink, purple, blue, yellow, red and white. The result felt much more like a garden full of wildflowers than a traditional wedding floral palette.
The bridesmaids' dresses added even more color. Instead of identical dresses, they wore different shades that worked together without being perfectly matched.
I love photographing weddings like this because there is so much personality in every frame. The color wasn't limited to one statement arrangement or bouquet—it carried throughout the entire day.
Wedding Photos Around the Sunset Coffee Building
One of my favorite things about photographing a wedding in downtown Houston is the variety you can get without having to travel far.
At the Sunset Coffee Building, we were able to photograph the wedding outdoors beneath the trees and then use the surrounding paths, Buffalo Bayou and downtown setting for portraits.
The venue itself also has a completely different look from the outdoor spaces. The clean lines, interesting architecture and rooftop areas give you a more urban backdrop, which worked especially well against the softness of the florals and wedding attire.
That variety means the gallery doesn't look like everything happened in one place, even though we stayed right around the venue.
A Reception Filled With Color and Candlelight
The colorful florals continued into the reception.
The tables were kept relatively simple with white linens, allowing the flowers, amber glassware and tall candles to bring in the color. Once the sun went down and the candles were lit, the entire look became warmer and more intimate.
That's something I especially loved about this wedding. The design didn't feel like color had been added just for the sake of being colorful. The flowers and details felt relaxed and organic during the daylight hours and then completely transformed once evening arrived.
And, of course, once dinner and the formalities were finished, the celebration moved to the dance floor.
Why I Loved Photographing This Sunset Coffee Building Wedding
There was so much visual variety packed into this wedding day.
The outdoor ceremony felt relaxed and colorful. The downtown Houston setting gave us a completely different backdrop for portraits. And the reception became warm and candlelit as the evening went on.
But more than anything, this wedding felt personal.
That's what I think colorful weddings do particularly well. Instead of choosing details simply because they're considered traditional wedding colors, couples can use flowers, clothing and décor that actually feel like them.
You don't need every bridesmaid in the same dress or every flower to fit perfectly into two designated colors. Sometimes the combinations that are a little less expected are the ones that photograph the most beautifully.
