💖 The Woodlands Family Photographer: Coordinated Perfection Over Matching | Houston Family Photos

Oh, friends, I am so excited to share a peek into a recent family photo session I had the joy of capturing! This sweet couple—who are raising three absolutely adorable girls, ages six, three, and one—showed everyone the perfect way to style a family for photos. It was pure magic!

When you look at their images, the first thing you notice is the joy, the love, and the effortless connection between them. You see a family having fun. And that is always my main goal as a photographer for family photos!

The Secret to Great Outfits: Coordinated, Not Cloned

We've all seen those 90s family photos: everyone in the exact same white button-down shirt and jeans. While iconic in their own way, those outfits often draw the eye to the clothing first. Our brains are simply wired to spot that identical pattern! But I want your brain to see the genuine, wonderful story of your family first.

That’s why I always tell my clients we are going for coordinated, not matching!

This wonderful mama perfectly nailed the coordinated look. The colors flowed so effortlessly together, creating a seamless background that kept the focus squarely on her beautiful girls and the parents' loving gazes.

Here are a few of the styling tricks she used (and that I swear by as your Houston family photographer):

  • Avoid Uniformity: Try not to dress any two family members in the exact same color or the same type of top. A sweater on Dad and a polo on a child? Perfect! Everyone in the same shirt and same pants? Less so! We want variety to keep the eye moving and the image dynamic.
  • Embrace Texture: Texture is your best friend! Think cozy knits, soft lace, corduroy, or even a woven blanket. Wearing lots of textures looks absolutely amazing in photos and adds depth and interest without being distracting.
  • The Pattern Rule (and its Exception!): Generally, I suggest sticking to just one or two patterns (like a floral or a plaid) and using solid colors and textures for the rest of the outfits to keep the photo from looking too busy. But, this family proved there are beautiful exceptions! You can sometimes get away with a few patterns if they are different enough—like a delicate, smaller floral print paired with a bolder, larger one.
  • Throw in a Pop of the Unexpected: Don’t be afraid to mix an unexpected color into your chosen palette or add interest with small accessories like a fun headband, a scarf, or a special necklace.

Mandi’s Tip: When you’ve made your final selections, lay all the items out together and check that nothing clashes or looks "off." If you’re ever stuck, please know that I’m always available to help my clients figure out clothing—I truly love the styling part of the process!

💖 Embracing the Real-Life Magic with Your The Woodlands Photographer

As an entrepreneur at heart who started out making and selling things as a child (everything from lemonade to doll clothes!), I know the value of creating something unique and treasured. And when it comes to family photography, I go above and beyond because your family deserves the absolute best real-life memories captured.

And sometimes, real life shows up right in the middle of a photo session!

About halfway through our time together, the sweet three-year-old discovered a tiny scratch on her foot and became completely fixated on it. There were tears and nothing to console her—a totally relatable moment for any parent!

Rather than force a smile, we embraced the situation. I focused on capturing her looking lovingly at a parent, a little trick to hide the tears and turn the focus back to their bond. Sometimes you just have to accommodate and adjust in the moment. And for the memory book? I absolutely snagged a few frames of her crying. She was still just as beautiful, and those photos capture a memory of that moment in time—the real life that comes with raising a little one.

Always remember: the most meaningful photos are the ones that are genuine. We can work together to make the outfits flow beautifully, but your family’s joy, love, and fun will always be the focus!
