Bringing a new baby home is wonderful, exhausting, emotional, and usually a little chaotic. The last thing most new parents want to do is pack up a newborn, a diaper bag, outfits, siblings and everything else they might need for a trip to a photography studio.
That's one of the reasons I love in-home newborn photography.
I photograph newborn sessions in families' homes throughout The Woodlands and surrounding areas, creating natural images of this very short season without asking families to go anywhere. You get to stay in the place where you're most comfortable, take breaks whenever your baby needs them, and document what life actually looks like after bringing your newest family member home.
If you're considering newborn pictures at home, here's what you can expect.
What Is an In-Home Newborn Session?
An in-home newborn session takes place in your own home rather than in a photography studio.
My approach is a blend of gently guided portraits and lifestyle photography. We'll create beautiful photographs of your baby, but I also want to document the relationships surrounding your baby—the way you hold them, tiny stretches and yawns, siblings peeking into the crib, snuggles on the bed and all the little interactions that make this season yours.
I'll guide you when you need it, so you don't have to figure out where to stand, what to do with your hands or how to pose. At the same time, I leave plenty of room for natural moments to happen.
Your House Does Not Need to Be Perfect
This is probably one of the biggest concerns parents have about newborn pictures at home.
Please don't feel like you need a magazine-worthy house or a perfectly decorated nursery.
You just had a baby. I don't expect your home to look untouched.
Before we begin, we'll look for the areas of your home with the best light and decide where it makes sense to photograph. This is often the primary bedroom, nursery or living room. We may move a few things from a nightstand or straighten an area that's going to be in the photographs, but you absolutely do not need to deep-clean your entire house before I arrive.
The photographs are about your family, not whether there is laundry sitting in another room.
What If My House Doesn't Have a Lot of Natural Light?
You don't need enormous windows in every room to have beautiful newborn photographs.
When I arrive, I'll look at the available light throughout your home and determine which spaces will photograph best. Sometimes the room parents expect us to use isn't actually the room with the prettiest light, and that's completely fine.
Part of my job is knowing how to work with the home you have.
Does My Baby Need to Be Asleep?
No.
Your newborn does not need to sleep through the entire session.
Some of my favorite photographs happen when babies are awake, stretching, looking around or interacting with their parents. If your baby sleeps, wonderful. If your baby decides that morning is the perfect time to stay wide awake, we'll work with that too.
I'm not trying to force your baby into a rigid photography schedule.
What Happens If My Baby Cries?
We stop.
Newborn sessions aren't something we need to rush through. If your baby needs to be fed, changed, rocked or simply held for a while, that's what we'll do.
Those breaks are completely normal and are one reason I allow plenty of time for newborn sessions.
Sometimes the moments that happen while comforting your baby also become beautiful photographs. This stage of parenthood isn't perfectly quiet and polished, and your gallery doesn't have to pretend that it is.
How Long Does an In-Home Newborn Session Take?
My newborn sessions can last up to approximately 90 minutes.
That gives us enough time to photograph your baby and family without putting everyone under pressure if we need to stop for feeding, diaper changes or soothing.
We may not need the entire time. I simply don't want new parents watching the clock because their baby needs a break.
When Should Newborn Pictures Be Taken?
Many families schedule newborn photographs during the first few weeks after their baby arrives, but there isn't one perfect day that works for every family.
If you want photographs when your baby is especially tiny and sleepy, scheduling earlier can be ideal. But beautiful newborn photographs are still possible if you need additional time to settle in at home.
I would much rather have you choose a time when you're comfortable having me there than feel stressed because you think you've missed some imaginary deadline.
If you're expecting, it's a good idea to reach out before your baby arrives so we can begin planning and leave some flexibility around your actual delivery date.
What Should We Wear for Newborn Pictures?
Keep it comfortable and relatively simple.
Soft neutrals and muted colors tend to work beautifully for in-home newborn photography because they keep the attention on your family and work well with most home environments.
You don't all need to wear the same color. In fact, coordinating rather than matching usually creates a more natural result.
For your baby, simple is often best. A neutral onesie, soft sleeper, swaddle or even just a diaper with a beautiful blanket can photograph wonderfully.
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable wearing. New moms especially shouldn't feel pressured to fit into a particular outfit or dress a certain way immediately after having a baby.
Do We Need Newborn Props?
No.
My newborn photography is focused much more on your baby and your family than elaborate props or heavily styled setups.
If you have something meaningful you'd like to incorporate—a special blanket, heirloom, handmade item or something from your baby's nursery—we can absolutely talk about using it.
But you don't need to buy a collection of newborn photography props before your session.
Your home and your family already give us plenty to work with.
Can Siblings Be Included?
Absolutely.
Some of my favorite newborn photographs include older brothers and sisters.
I don't expect young children to sit perfectly beside a newborn and smile at the camera on command. We'll keep things relaxed and give them opportunities to interact naturally with their new sibling.
Depending on their age and personality, that might mean sitting together on the bed, looking into the crib, giving the baby a kiss or snuggling with Mom and Dad.
If an older sibling needs a break, that's okay too.
What About Our Pets?
Pets are part of the family, and when it can be done safely and comfortably, I'm happy to incorporate them into a few photographs.
Sometimes that's a dog curled up nearby while everyone is on the bed. Sometimes it's simply a quick family photograph that includes the four-legged family member who isn't quite sure what to think about the new arrival.
We can decide what makes sense based on your pet's temperament and your baby's comfort.
Why Choose In-Home Newborn Photography?
One of my favorite things about photographing newborns at home is that the setting already means something.
This is where you brought your baby home.
It's the nursery you prepared while waiting for them. The chair where you've been feeding them. The bedroom where you've spent countless hours snuggling. It's also the place where siblings are getting to know the newest member of the family.
Years from now, those details may mean even more than they do today.
In-home newborn photography lets us document your baby while also preserving a little piece of what your family's life looked like when they first arrived.
What Does an In-Home Newborn Session Actually Look Like?
Every family is different, which is exactly what I love about these sessions.
You can see a real example in The Real Moments: An In-Home Newborn Session in The Woodlands, where I photographed a family at home during those early newborn days.
Seeing an actual session can give you a much better idea of the relaxed, natural style I bring to newborn photography.
Planning Newborn Pictures in The Woodlands
If you're expecting a baby in The Woodlands, you don't need to have every detail figured out before reaching out.
I'll help you prepare for your session, decide what to wear and determine which areas of your home will work best once I'm there.
My goal is to make newborn photography one of the easier things you do during those first weeks—not another item on an already very long new-parent to-do list.

FAQ
Do I need to clean my whole house before newborn pictures?
No. We'll typically photograph in only a few areas of your home, based largely on the available light. A little straightening in those spaces is plenty.
Does my newborn have to be asleep for pictures?
Not at all. Awake, sleepy and everything in between can photograph beautifully. We'll follow your baby's lead throughout the session.
Can parents and siblings be in the newborn photos?
Yes. My newborn sessions are designed to document your baby as well as your family's connection with them. Parents and siblings are an important part of that story.
How long is an in-home newborn photography session?
My newborn sessions can last up to approximately 90 minutes, which allows time for feeding, changing and soothing without rushing.
When should I book newborn photography?
I recommend reaching out while you're pregnant whenever possible. We can begin planning ahead of time and account for the fact that babies don't always arrive according to schedule.
Do you photograph newborns outside The Woodlands?
Yes. I'm based in The Woodlands and also photograph families throughout surrounding communities and the Greater Houston area.
