In-Home Newborn Photography in Houston | A Relaxed Newborn Session

There is something especially sweet about photographing a new baby at home.

No packing a diaper bag. No loading a brand-new baby into the car. No trying to arrive at a studio at exactly the right time between feedings and naps.

For this Houston newborn session, I came to them.

I had photographed Mom and Dad's maternity session at Eastern Glades in Memorial Park while they were waiting for their baby girl to arrive. A few weeks later, I got to photograph them again—this time at home as a brand-new family of three.

And honestly, that's one of my favorite parts of this job. I get to photograph families as their stories change.

Starting in the Nursery

We began the session in their daughter's nursery.

I love including the nursery in newborn photos because it's such a specific part of this season of life. Parents spend months preparing this little room for someone they haven't even met yet, and then suddenly she's here.

I don't need a nursery to look like it belongs in a magazine, either. We're not photographing the room for an interior-design feature. It's simply part of the story.

I want photographs of you holding your baby there, cuddling her, looking down at her and taking in this strange and wonderful reality that this tiny person you've been waiting for is finally home.

Those are the photographs that will mean something years from now.

Finding the Best Natural Light in Your Home

After photographing in the nursery, we moved into the primary bedroom.

The room had a large window with beautiful natural light and a soft, neutral color palette, which gave us a completely different look without ever leaving the house.

This is something I look for when I arrive for an in-home newborn session.

You don't need every room in your house to have perfect light. And you definitely don't need to clean and prepare your entire home for me.

I look around and find the spaces that are going to photograph best.

Sometimes that's the nursery. Sometimes it's the primary bedroom or living room. Sometimes the prettiest light is coming through one great window, and that's all we need.

I'm much more interested in good light and genuine connection than whether your entire house is camera-ready.

Newborn Photos That Feel Like Your Family

This session was especially simple because it was just Mom, Dad and their baby girl.

No complicated posing. No elaborate props.

Mostly a lot of cuddling and snuggling.

That's exactly how I like newborn sessions to feel.

I'll guide you when you need it—where to stand, where to put your hands, how to position yourselves in the light—but I don't want the photographs to feel stiff or overly posed.

Hold your baby. Look at her. Kiss her forehead. Snuggle together on the bed.

You don't need to know what to do in front of the camera. That's my job.

Your job is just to be with your baby.

Your Baby Doesn't Have to Sleep Through the Session

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that everything depends on having a perfectly sleepy baby.

It doesn't.

My in-home newborn sessions are relaxed and baby-led. If your baby needs to eat, we stop. If she needs a diaper change, we stop. If she wants to be held instead of lying somewhere by herself, we work with that.

Some babies sleep through most of their session. Others are wide awake and want to know exactly what's going on.

Both are completely fine.

We're documenting your baby as she is right now, not trying to force her into a predetermined schedule for photographs.

Why I Love Photographing Newborns at Home

A studio can be beautiful, but there's something an in-home newborn session gives you that a studio can't: this is where your life is actually happening.

It's the nursery you prepared for your daughter.

It's the bedroom where you're getting up with her in the middle of the night.

It's the couch where you're spending more hours than you ever imagined feeding and cuddling a newborn.

And years from now, your home may look completely different. You may redecorate. You may move.

Your tiny newborn certainly won't stay tiny.

Photographing this season at home preserves more than what your baby looked like. It preserves a little bit of what your life felt like when you first became a family of three.

What If My House Isn't Perfect for Newborn Photos?

Please don't worry about this.

You don't need an enormous home, a professionally designed nursery or floor-to-ceiling windows.

Before we start, I'll look for the areas with the best available light and we'll work there. We may move a few things off a nightstand or straighten bedding, but I'm not coming over to photograph your house.

I'm coming over to photograph your family.

One or two rooms with decent natural light are usually all we need.

And because we're at home, everything your baby needs is already there. Feedings, diaper changes and little breaks can happen whenever they need to.

That's a big part of why in-home sessions work so well during those first few weeks.

When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos?

I recommend reaching out while you're still pregnant whenever possible. We can plan around your due date and adjust once your baby actually arrives.

And don't worry if you missed some imaginary two-week newborn photography deadline.

There isn't one.

Your baby doesn't suddenly become “too old” for meaningful newborn photographs because a certain number of days have passed. We'll simply photograph the season you're actually in.

If you're expecting and wondering what the entire process looks like, I've also put together a guide to what to expect from an in-home newborn photography session, including how to prepare, what to wear and what happens if your baby needs breaks.
