In-Home Newborn Photos in The Woodlands | Sterling Ridge Family Session

One of the questions I hear from parents planning newborn pictures is whether 90 minutes is really necessary, especially when there are little ones involved.

I completely understand the concern. Ninety minutes can sound like an awfully long time to ask a three-year-old and a five-year-old to participate in family photos.

But here's the thing: we're not taking pictures of everyone for 90 minutes straight.

This recent in-home newborn session in the Sterling Ridge neighborhood of The Woodlands is a perfect example of why I allow that extra time.

A New Baby and Two Proud Big Brothers

This sweet family recently welcomed their third little boy, and I joined them at home when their newborn was just three weeks old.

We started in their beautiful, bright living room, where the neutral colors and natural light created such a lovely setting for family portraits.

With three boys ages three weeks, three years, and five years, there was plenty of activity. And that's exactly what I expect when photographing a family with young children.

We captured the whole family together, the boys with their new baby brother, and smaller groupings throughout the session.

Rather than expecting the older boys to participate the entire time, we simply worked around their moods and attention spans.

Why I Allow 90 Minutes for In-Home Newborn Sessions

Before the session, Mom mentioned that she thought 90 minutes might be too long.

I hear that sometimes, and I always explain that the extra time isn't about taking more and more pictures of the same thing.

It's about giving everyone room to be themselves.

About halfway through our session, the baby needed to eat. No problem. We paused for his feeding and continued when he was ready.

The boys also came in and out of the photographs depending on how they were feeling. While they took breaks, I photographed Mom and Dad with the baby, captured individual portraits, and spent a little time photographing the nursery.

There was no pressure to keep everyone in front of the camera.

That's one of my favorite things about photographing newborns at home. We can follow the family's rhythm instead of trying to fit everything into a rigid schedule.

The Sweetest Moments Often Happen Between the Posed Photos

I've noticed something over the years when photographing families with young children.

Just when parents think their kids are completely finished with pictures, the kids often surprise us.

Sometimes I'll step away with Mom, Dad, and the baby to capture a few quieter portraits. Before long, the older siblings get curious about what we're doing and wander back to join us.

And often, those are some of my favorite moments.

They're no longer being asked to sit still or smile. They're simply coming over because they want to be part of what's happening.

Giving children a little freedom during a session can make such a difference.

Photographing the Nursery and the Little Details

We also spent part of this session in the baby's nursery.

I love including nursery photographs during in-home newborn sessions because these spaces hold so much of a family's story.

Parents put time and thought into preparing a room for their baby, and before they know it, that little nursery begins to change.

Years from now, photographs of the room where their baby first slept can bring back memories they might otherwise have forgotten.

And when a newborn needs a feeding or diaper change, that can be the perfect opportunity for me to photograph those little details without interrupting anyone.

Newborn Photography in Sterling Ridge and The Woodlands

If you're expecting a baby and wondering whether in-home newborn photography will work with older siblings, I hope this session offers a little reassurance.

Your children don't need to sit still for 90 minutes. Your baby doesn't need to sleep the entire time. And we certainly don't need everything to go according to a strict plan.

We make time for feedings, diaper changes, sibling breaks, and all the little things that come with having a newborn.

My goal is to create beautiful photographs of your family while keeping the experience relaxed and comfortable.

I photograph in-home newborn sessions throughout The Woodlands, including Sterling Ridge, Alden Bridge, Cochran's Crossing, Creekside Park, and surrounding communities such as Spring, Conroe, and Tomball.

If you're planning newborn pictures, I'd love to help you capture this season of life.
