How to choose a location for your engagement photos
Hey friend!
So, I've been getting a lot of questions about how to choose the perfect location for engagement photos, and I thought I'd share some tips with you. Trust me, it's not as daunting as it seems!
First things first, don't limit yourself to the ordinary. Parks are great and all, but there are so many other cool places to explore! Let your imagination run wild and think outside the box. Have an idea that might be unconventional? Go for it! We can make magic happen anywhere.
Next, choose a location that holds some meaning for you and your partner. It could be a cozy bar where you've shared countless laughs, a museum you both adore, or even the place where you had your very first date. These personal touches will make your photos even more special and unique.
Now, let's talk seasons. It's important to consider the time of year for your session. If it's in February, don't expect the Arboretum to be lush and green like you might have envisioned. Likewise, if it's smack in the middle of July, keep in mind that the beach can be scorching hot and packed with people. Nobody wants sweat and crowds in their engagement photos, right?
To make things easier, let's categorize locations into three types: urban, natural, and unique. I like to come up with fun names for things, you know? The urban locations give off a more vibrant and city-like vibe, perfect for those who love the hustle and bustle. The natural locations highlight the beauty of the great outdoors, with lush greenery and peaceful surroundings. And the unique locations... well, they're just downright special and one-of-a-kind.
By the way, I've put together a list of my favorite engagement photo locations in the greater Houston area. These spots will give you a good sense of the kind of warm, romantic, intimate, and playful atmosphere I love to create.
I hope these tips help you choose the perfect location for your engagement photos. Remember, just have fun with it and be yourselves. After all, these photos are all about capturing your love and happiness together.
Sending you warm and camera-ready vibes!

College Station, Texas
DOWNTOWN HOUSTON- MAIN STREET
First off, this block has some seriously beautiful features. The brick paved street and sidewalks give off this old-world vibe, and the iron light posts lining the sidewalks add an extra touch of elegance. The architecture of the buildings is stunning too, with intricate designs that transport you back to the nineteenth-century.
But what really makes this block special is the fact that it's like the foodie paradise of Downtown. There's a whole bunch of restaurant cafes and bars all around, so if you and your partner are into good food, you'll be in heaven. And the best part is, this block offers plenty of opportunities for amazing engagement photos too. The vibrant colors of the buildings and the unique architectural details create a gorgeous backdrop for capturing the love between you and your partner.
Oh, and if you want even more options, I found this cool outdoor area called Market Street Park at 301 Milam Street. It's nestled among all these local restaurants and bars, so you get that perfect blend of urban charm and personal touches for your photos. Plus, it's a great spot to grab a bite and celebrate after your session!
So, whether you're a Houston local or just visiting, I highly recommend considering the 300 block of Main Street for your engagement photos. It's warm, romantic, intimate, and playful – everything you could ask for. Trust me, this location will truly capture your love story in the most magical way.

Downtown Houston, Texas
Rooftop
If you're wondering where to find the best rooftops in downtown Houston, I have a pretty easy suggestion for you. All you gotta do is head to a parking garage and make your way up to the top floor. Trust me, the further you are from downtown (within reason, of course), the more amazing the skyline view will be.
Now, let me let you in on a little secret. The Saks Garage is one of the most wonderful options for a rooftop photo shoot. And get this - they actually allow photo shoots despite being pretty popular. It's right in the heart of Houston, surrounded by these huge skyscrapers that give off the coolest urban vibes. Plus, the way the tall buildings create a shadow makes for some seriously well-lit and picturesque photos.
When you're planning your engagement photos, don't forget to think about the emotions you want them to evoke. Warmth, romance, intimacy, playfulness - all of that good stuff. A skilled photographer can totally create an atmosphere that captures those special moments of love and joy between you and your partner. So why not take advantage of Houston's stunning architecture and picturesque rooftops for your engagement photo shoot? I promise you'll make memories that will last a lifetime in this incredible city.

Downtown Houston, Texas

Buffalo Bayou / Eleanor Tinsley Park
The view of the city skyline from here is just jaw-dropping! And the best part? It's beautiful no matter the time of day – daylight, sunset, and even at night. How cool is that?
But here's the thing, if you're into more natural settings, this park has got you covered too. There's plenty of green space throughout, so you can get those outdoorsy, playful shots that look super authentic. It's like having all the best of both worlds in one place!
Now, let me tell you about one particular highlight of this park that I absolutely fell in love with. It's the Rosemont Pedestrian Bridge, which is located at the western end. Once you make your way up there, you're greeted with this breathtaking view of the Houston skyline, especially as the sun starts to set. It seriously reminds me of that Love Lock Bridge in Paris, you know the one? Only, they had to remove all the locks for safety reasons. Bummer. But hey, we can still soak up that romantic atmosphere and create those warm, intimate moments with our camera. Trust me, this bridge is like a hidden gem for capturing those heartfelt shots that will make your heart melt.
Whether you prefer the city skyline or a more natural setting, it's got everything you need to create some amazing photos.

Buffalo Bayou - Houston, Texas
Memorial Park / Eastern Glades
This place is seriously picturesque and perfect for capturing those warm, romantic, and intimate engagement photos. As soon as you step into Eastern Glades, you're surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. It's like a little paradise hidden right in the city.
What's really cool about this park is its strong emphasis on conservation efforts. They're dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the place, and you can really feel it. It creates such a serene and intimate atmosphere, adding depth and emotion to any photo you take here.
Can you just picture it? Walking hand in hand with your partner along the winding paths, with rays of sunlight shining through the trees, creating this soft and dreamy glow. It's like stepping into a fairytale. Every corner of Eastern Glades holds the potential for a magical and playful moment that you'll want to capture and cherish forever.
One of the standout features of this park is the Arboretum Lake. It's absolutely stunning and provides the most breathtaking backdrop for your photoshoot. The reflections of the surrounding foliage on the tranquil water create this ethereal and dreamlike atmosphere. You can pose by the water's edge or even take a romantic boat ride for some extra charm. Believe me, your engagement photos will exude a sense of serenity and love like no other.
But wait, there's more! Hines Lake is another hidden gem within Memorial Park, and it offers a totally different vibe. It's vibrant and lively, but still maintains that natural beauty that makes this place so special. This lake is perfect for embracing a more playful setting, capturing those candid moments and genuine laughter that really show the joy and excitement of this special time in your life.

Eastern Glades - Houston, Texas
North/South Boulevard
As you stroll along this enchanting street, you'll be greeted by vibrant red brick walkways that wind their way through a breathtaking canopy of oak trees. I mean, seriously, it's like something out of a dream. The whole place just oozes romance and intimacy, making it the perfect backdrop for any special moments you want to capture.
Here's the interesting part - this place used to be off-limits for photography. The locals were so protective of their beloved boulevard that they banned photography altogether. Can you imagine? But thankfully, the city of Houston stepped in and overturned that ban, and now we can all enjoy and capture the beauty of this iconic spot.
Now, let me give you a heads up. Even though the ban is lifted, the residents still hold this place close to their hearts. So, when you visit, make sure to be respectful and considerate. They have a real attachment to this place, and we want to preserve its charm, right?
One thing to remember is to leave your props at home. As much as we might be tempted to bring some confetti or rose petals to add to the magic, it's best to resist the urge. Those things can make a mess and disrupt the tranquility that this charming neighborhood exudes.
But trust me, we don't need fancy props to create amazing photos here. The warm and playful ambiance of South Boulevard is more than enough to make your shots authentically beautiful. The combination of the red brick walkways and the majestic oak trees creates a unique atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else in Houston.
So, my friend, if you're looking for an intimate and special place to capture some stunning photos, South Boulevard is the destination for you. Just remember to treat this spot with respect, and you'll not only preserve its charm but also honor the efforts that were made to bring photography back to this cherished location.

PUNDT PARK
Pundt Park is a total oasis, spanning a whopping 380 acres. Can you even imagine how expansive that is? But let me tell you, there's one area in particular that steals my heart every single time I visit – Spring Creek. It's like stepping into a whole other world, surrounded by soft, white sand and delicate beachgrass. You wouldn't believe that you're just a short distance away from the busy city life. And the best part? The towering pine trees that serve as a backdrop, giving it that distinct Texan feel. It's seriously breathtaking, my friend.
Now, if you're thinking of planning a photography session here, I highly recommend coming during Golden Hour. Trust me, it's pure magic. Golden Hour is that special time before sunset when everything is bathed in a warm, golden light. It adds a whole new level of beauty to the already stunning surroundings. Rice University
I know, I know, it might sound a bit random, but trust me, the place is absolutely stunning. The architecture is like something out of a fairytale, with a mix of different building styles that give it a charming European vibe. When you take your engagement photos here, they turn out so dreamy and romantic. I mean, who wouldn't want that for their special memories, right? The setting really sets the mood, and it's perfect for capturing those intimate and playful moments between you and your partner.
The only thing is, sometimes it can get pretty crowded with other photographers. So, if you're planning on having your shoot here, I highly recommend making a booking at least a week in advance. That way, you can secure your spot and have the place all to yourselves (well, maybe not entirely, but you get the idea).
Oh, and just a heads up - there's a reservation fee of $50, along with an annual fee of $50. It may seem a bit pricey, but trust me, it's totally worth it for the stunning backdrop and the atmosphere it creates in your photos.
Now, here's a little secret tip for you - if you happen to have a personal connection to Rice University, like being an alum or something, we highly encourage you to choose it for your engagement photos. There's something extra special about capturing moments in a place that holds sentimental value for you. It adds that authentic touch to your shoot and makes it all the more meaningful.

Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston has a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere, with a charming and sophisticated decoration. It's a place that can make you feel like you're in Washington D.C., without needing to catch a plane. The museum is adorned with stunning stone columns that are absolutely breathtaking. When my clients choose to wear bold colors against the gray stone, it creates a stunning contrast that I find incredibly flattering.
Engagement photo sessions at the Museum of Fine Arts offer a unique way for couples to share their common interests and tell their love story. In this case, the couple shared a passion for fine arts, which brought them even closer together. The fusion of their love for each other and their love for fine arts created a sense of excitement and passion that is truly beautiful to capture in photographs.
The warm and romantic atmosphere of the museum adds an intimate and playful touch to the photos. The combination of the cozy setting and the couple's genuine affection for each other creates a truly magical ambiance. One of the park's highlights is its well-maintained lawns, adorned with rows of stunning azalea bushes. PARKING GARAGES
Something I love about parking garages is that they're like a blank canvas but dynamic and modern enough to serve as a backdrop for both dressed-up and casual sessions. Garages are especially ideal during sunset.

Indoor Studio
Something that I'm really loving right now - shooting in a studio. Seriously, it has so many benefits, especially when it comes to getting those clean and beautiful photos right from the start. I've been experimenting with different backgrounds and lighting setups, and let me tell you, the results have been absolutely stunning. It's like adding an extra touch of magic to the images. Plus, shooting in a studio setting helps make the whole photo shoot experience more relaxed and natural. It's like hanging out with friends in a cozy and fun environment.
One of the things I love most about shooting in the studio is that I can give each client more individual attention. It's all about capturing their unique personality and style in the photos. And you know what? The studio is a godsend during those hot and humid summer months in Houston. Trust me, the ladies I work with really appreciate the relief from the uncomfortable weather conditions. It makes for a much more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Oh, and here's another awesome thing about shooting in a studio - it's the perfect alternative if it happens to rain on the scheduled day. Instead of scrambling to find a new location or rescheduling, we can just head to the cozy, intimate studio and continue with the shoot. It's a great option to have in our back pocket.
So yeah, shooting in a studio has been such a game-changer for me. It's made the whole photography experience more intimate, warm, playful, and authentic. I'm genuinely excited to continue exploring and capturing beautiful moments in this cozy little space. Cannot wait to share more of my studio adventures with you soon!

Think about it, your home is where you can truly be yourselves and create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. When you have your session at home, you can do all the things you love together. I'm talking about listening to your favorite music and having a dance party in the living room, cooking your favorite meal as a team, challenging each other to a friendly board game competition, and let's not forget about spending some quality time with your beloved fur babies. And don't worry, I'll be there, capturing all those special moments.
But here's the really cool part. Having your engagement session at home means that the resulting photos are not just beautiful, they represent a significant milestone in your relationship. These photos will give you a sneak peek into your everyday life as a couple and showcase one of the first homes you shared. How far out from the wedding to book
Something that I think is super important when it comes to wedding planning – finding the right photographer. I mean, after you say "yes" to your partner's proposal, this should be one of the first things on your to-do list. Trust me, we photographers start booking out a year in advance in some respects.
Now, when it comes to choosing a wedding and engagement photographer, there are a few things to keep in mind. Think about what kind of pictures you want –
- do you like studio shots, or are you more into those dreamy outdoor shots? Maybe a mixture of both?
- do you prefer candid, natural shots, or more posed ones?
- do you like brighter pictures or moodier tones?
- do you want photos of you and your fiancé doing things you love?
It's all about finding someone who aligns with your taste and style.
Oh, and don't forget to talk to the photographer about your favorite poses together! I mean, this is your special day, so you want to make sure they capture all those must-have shots that truly represent you as a couple. And if, after your engagement session, you feel like the photographer isn't the right fit for you, no worries! It's completely alright to end the partnership. You want to have a good connection and feel like friends by the end of that shoot, because they'll be there by your side throughout your wedding day.
Ultimately, your wedding photographer should bring connection, romance, intimacy, and playfulness to the images they capture. They should totally get your vision and work with you to create beautiful memories that you'll cherish forever. So take your time in finding the perfect photographer who makes you feel comfortable and excited about your special day.
Remember, finding the right photographer is like finding a new BFF for your wedding journey. So have fun with it, trust your instincts, and make sure to read those contracts carefully.

What to Wear
I know it can be a struggle to figure out what will look good and reflect your personal style, but don't worry, I've got your back.
The most important thing to remember is to stay true to yourself. If you're someone who prefers simple clothing in your everyday life, then stick with that for your photoshoot. It's all about feeling comfortable and beautiful. Trust me, when you're relaxed and wearing something that feels like "you," it shines through in the photos.
Now, let's talk about coordinating outfits with your partner. This is important because you want your outfits to complement each other and the overall vibe of your shoot. A great tip is to choose a color scheme that matches the season and location of your shoot. For example, if you're having a fall shoot, go for those warm tones that will make the autumn colors pop. If it's a spring shoot, incorporate lighter colors to reflect the freshness of the season. And hey, no matter the season, your engagement photos in Houston are going to be absolutely stunning.
But here's a little secret to make your photos stand out even more - accessories and unique fabrics! While it's important to stick to your color theme, don't be afraid to add some texture to your outfits. For the ladies, try adding a chunky necklace, hat, or scarf to complete your look. And for the guys, layering your outfits can add dimension and help you better match your partner's style.
At the end of the day, your engagement photos should capture the warmth, romance, intimacy, and playfulness of your relationship. So have fun with your outfits, be yourselves, and trust that your photographer (cough, cough, ME!) will capture those beautiful moments that make you two so special.
